One of the more well-known CBD brands in the United States is Charlotte’s Web. Charlotte’s Web creates and sells a number of different products that contain CBD.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical found in cannabis plants. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD doesn’t make you feel intoxicated, but it does have some promising health benefits. Though research is ongoing, studies done to date indicate that it might help ease pain, inflammation, skin conditions, anxiety, and more.

Charlotte’s Web was founded by seven siblings — the Stanley brothers — who have years of experience in cultivating hemp.

In 2012, the Stanley brothers created a hemp strain that was high in CBD and low in THC. The strain was used to create a tincture for Charlotte Figi, a girl who had a rare seizure condition called Dravet syndrome. The tincture decreased the severity and frequency of her seizures.

Named after Charlotte Figi, Charlotte’s Web now sells a range of hemp-based wellness products infused with CBD.

Cannabis terminology

Charlotte’s Web is one of the oldest, most well-known CBD brands. The company displays many positive reviews on its website. They’re also certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority. Charlotte’s Web recently won Product of the Year 2022 for their CBD gummies.

Charlotte’s Web is also a certified B-corp. This certification is awarded to companies that meet certain standards for social and environmental responsibility and transparency.

COAs

Charlotte’s Web is transparent about what goes into its products, offering batch-specific COAs online. You need a batch number to see the COA for the specific batch of the product you bought. However, they do provide a list of recent sample COAs if you want to peruse them before making a purchase.

Charlotte’s Web COAs look a little different compared to other CBD companies. The company provides a branded summary instead of the actual results from the labs, but they do disclose which labs they used. They explain on the company website that the COA will detail the product batch levels of:

cannabinoids (including CBD and THC)
heavy metals
pesticides
residual solvents

Manufacturing processes

Charlotte’s Web is transparent about their process, giving customers an overview of their planting process and quality control processes here.

Additionally, the facility in Louisville, Colorado, where they make their products follows the FDA’s current good manufacturing practices (CGMPs) .

While this is something all CBD brands must do, Charlotte’s Web has gone the additional step to get a third-party certification from NSF International that they’re following all GMPs. This confirms that their facility uses the appropriate equipment, methods, and controls to make their products.

Charlotte’s Web offers products at a variety of potencies.

While their “original formula” oil provides 50 milligrams (mg) of CBD per milliliter (mL) of product, they also sell a low potency oil with only 7 mg/mL and a high potency oil with 60 mg/mL, plus a few other potency levels in between.

Gummies and capsules range from 10 to 25 mg per serving, while topicals range from 100 to 750 mg per container.

The variety of potencies makes it easy to find a product that works for you, whether you’re brand-new to CBD or have a little more experience.

Compared with other companies and considering potency, Charlotte’s Web products are relatively inexpensive. They range from around $15 to more than $100. The company also offers a discount for veterans, and they have a rewards program. As we mentioned earlier, Charlotte’s Web also offers discounts to students, teachers, first responders, and nurses.

Charlotte’s Web grows its own hemp in Colorado, Kentucky, and Oregon. While some of their hemp isn’t currently certified organic, the company is in the process of getting certified. All products are gluten-free, non-GMO, and vegan.

Charlotte’s Web markets this CBD oil as their go-to, everyday CBD oil, and a good option for people who haven’t tried CBD. The product contains only hemp extract, coconut oil, and flavoring (Mint Chocolate, Lemon Twist, or Orange Blossom). You can also opt for the unflavored version, which has an olive oil base.

This product has 17 mg of CBD per 1-mL dropper, but if you’re new to CBD, you may want to start with half a dropper full. If you’re looking for an even lower-dose product, you can try the 7 mg/mL oil.

The 17-mg/mL oil is isopropyl alcohol extracted, whereas most of Charlotte’s Web products are carbon dioxide (CO₂) extracted. Each extraction process has pros and cons.

CO₂ extraction is a solvent-free extraction process, so there are no harmful chemicals in the final process. However, this process can also remove the terpenes from the plant. Terpenes may offer their own beneficial effects.

With alcohol extraction, solvents such as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, butane, and hexane can leave more terpenes in the final product — though there’s a risk of possible residual solvents in the final process. You can read more about both of these extraction processes here.
