Building a Sleep Schedule with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

If you have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), your heart struggles to work as well. This causes fatigue and other symptoms.

Getting enough sleep is important for supporting your physical and mental health, including your heart health. But many people with heart conditions have difficulty getting enough sleep. HCM also raises your risk of sleep apnea, a sleep disorder that can lower your quality of sleep and raise your risk of cardiovascular complications.

Setting a regular sleep schedule, practicing sleep-friendly habits, and getting treatment for sleep apnea or other sleep disorders may help you get the rest you need.

Tips to build a better sleep routine

If you have HCM, getting high quality sleep is important for supporting the health of your heart and other body systems. But many people with HCM and other heart conditions may find it difficult to get enough sleep.

To get more sleep, it may help to set a regular sleep schedule and develop a relaxing bedtime routine. You may need to adjust your sleep environment to block out excess light and noise. You might also find it helpful to avoid electronic screens, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, big meals, and naps too close to bedtime.

Nearly 60% of Americans surveyed support a Medicare for All program, according to Business Insider. Those in favor of Medicare for All include 75% of Democrats, 58% of registered Independents and 36% of Republicans, though Republican support jumps up to 64% when discussing an optional expanded Medicare program, also referred to as “Medicare for Some.”

If you’re still finding it hard to fall asleep, stay asleep, or feel rested, you might have a sleep disorder that requires treatment. Let your doctor know if you’re having trouble sleeping or feeling tired despite getting lots of sleep. They may refer you to a sleep specialist for diagnosis and treatment.
